About Wearable Technology

Wearable technology represents one of the biggest trends in today's modern lifestyle, and it is fair to say that it is here to stay!

If you own any piece of clothing or watch or accessory that has any electronic or computer features, then you are already part of the wearable technology revolution.

If you don't, then after a few moments on this blog you'll probably want to change that! :)

For those new to this, you may be wondering what the point of wearable technology is, or indeed what it is at all?

Most of us these days have smartphones and are used to having much of our daily lives tracked in order to assist us in the best way possible - planning your week on a calendar, showing you travel routes, giving your email. Wearable technology is simply taking this a step further, such as a wristwatch that can monitor your exercise, or a camera hidden in a piece of clothing.

I can reassure you that the wearable technology world has come a long way since the calculator watch of the 1980s. Devices can now sync with your computer and in turn the internet, thus being able to exchange data with online communities, social media and other wearables enthusiasts.

Other than a few forays down the fashion catwalk, wearable technology really came into its own in 2013 with Google Glass - a pair of glasses through which you could read electronic text and notifications, including a built in camera. Brave idea, but the steep price put off consumers, and it hasn't taken off.

But elsewhere on the wearable technology market, other concepts have been thriving. First of all the smartwatch, which adds considerable functionality to the wristwatch, with the Pebble and Apple Watch being two leading examples. These are literally like having a computer or smartphone attached to your wrist, being able to run all manner of apps and even take phone calls.

Perhaps the most exciting wearable device however must be the activity tracker. These have more of a unique selling point than any other wearable to date, offering something new in the marketplace by way of monitoring your exercise and activity for health benefits, plus they are more affordable.

The future is exciting with developers experimenting with other types of accessories and jewelry to solve problems and enhance lifestyle. It is amazing to think what might be possible in 5 years time.
